A major infrastructure project is underway to bolster Ethiopia's energy supply chain, with Dangote Industries joining a consortium to develop a $1.55 billion fuel pipeline. The project, led by infrastructure firm Black Rhino Group and its backer, U.S. private equity giant Blackstone, will connect the Port of Djibouti with a new storage facility in Awash, Ethiopia.
Ethiopia, one of Africa's fastest-growing economies, is landlocked and depends on Djibouti's port for nearly all of its trade. Currently, fuel imports of diesel, petrol, and jet fuel are transported over 550 kilometers by thousands of road tankers. This method is not only expensive and slow but also contributes to road congestion and safety hazards.
The Horn of Africa Petroleum Pipeline is designed to replace this inefficient system. By creating a direct and high-capacity conduit, the pipeline will significantly lower transportation costs and increase the reliability of fuel distribution across the country.
The 550-kilometer pipeline is engineered to transport over 240,000 barrels of fuel per day. The project also includes an import facility and a storage depot with a capacity of 950,000 barrels in Damerjog, Djibouti. The governments of both Ethiopia and Djibouti have signed framework agreements to facilitate the development.
This investment is expected to have a broad economic impact beyond logistics. By ensuring a stable and more affordable energy supply, the pipeline will make Ethiopia a more attractive destination for foreign investment, particularly in sectors reliant on consistent energy. The project will also create jobs during its construction phase and for its ongoing operation.
The pipeline represents a critical step in modernizing the region's energy infrastructure. Its successful completion will provide a blueprint for private-sector financing of large-scale infrastructure in Africa. For Ethiopia, it underpins the nation's long-term economic strategy by removing a significant bottleneck to growth and solidifying its crucial trade corridor with Djibouti.
