UK Economy Rebounds in July, Defying Forecasts as AI and Service Sectors Drive Growth The United Kingdom’s economy expanded 0.5% in July, rebounding sharply from a 0.5% ...

The United Kingdom’s economy expanded 0.5% in July, rebounding sharply from a 0.5% contraction in June and surpassing economists' forecasts of 0.2% growth. The expansion was broad-based, with the services, production, and construction sectors all posting gains, providing a welcome sign of resilience amid persistent inflationary pressures.
The services sector was the primary engine of July’s growth, expanding by 0.5%. This recovery was partly attributed to the conclusion of industrial action in the health and education sectors, which allowed activity to return to more normal levels. Within services, the professional, scientific, and technical activities sub-sector was a standout performer, growing by 1.1%.
A significant contributor to the services rebound was a 6.8% surge in computer programming, consultancy, and related activities. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) specifically noted that businesses involved in artificial intelligence contributed to this strong performance, highlighting the growing economic impact of the technology sector.
Despite the strong monthly figure, the wider economic outlook remains fragile. Data shows the economy registered no growth in the three months leading up to July, underscoring underlying weakness and volatility. The sharp contraction in June, followed by July's rebound, suggests an economy struggling for consistent momentum.
The unexpected growth complicates the next decision for the Bank of England. With interest rates already at a 15-year high of 5.25%, stronger-than-expected economic activity could support the case for further hikes to curb inflation. However, analysts remain divided. Some view the data as evidence of economic resilience, while others caution that the rebound is temporary and that recession risks remain. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt welcomed the figures but stressed the government's focus on its plan to halve inflation.
