Airtel Africa, a subsidiary of India's Bharti Airtel, is planning an initial public offering for its mobile money business on the London Stock Exchange. The company announced its intention to list the unit, held under Airtel Mobile Commerce BV (AMC BV), within the next 12 months.
The strategic move is designed to unlock the standalone value of its flourishing fintech operations, which span 14 countries across the African continent. This decision reflects a broader corporate strategy to separate and potentially list major business segments to attract focused investment and realize their full market potential.
The planned listing is supported by the mobile money unit's impressive financial performance. For the fiscal year ending in March, the business reported a 21% increase in revenue in constant currency. Underscoring the scale of its operations, the total value of transactions processed through its platform surged by 38% to $102 billion during the same period.
The mobile money division carries a significant valuation benchmark from a 2021 funding round. An investment from Mastercard at that time valued the business at $2.65 billion. This prior valuation provides a strong reference point for investors as AMC BV prepares for its public market debut.
Investors reacted positively to the announcement, with shares of Airtel Africa climbing 4.2% on the London Stock Exchange. A successful IPO would provide AMC BV with capital to further expand its services and solidify its position in Africa's competitive digital payments landscape. The listing will offer public market investors direct exposure to one of the continent's major fintech players, distinct from the parent company's core telecommunications operations. The move could also set a precedent for other telecom operators in the region to monetize their high-growth digital finance arms.
