Alphabet’s Google Cloud business more than doubled its revenue to $30.7 billion in the third quarter, providing a lift as growth at Google Search and YouTube appeared more subdued.
Cloud growth offsets slower businesses
The performance puts Google Cloud at the center of Alphabet’s latest results. Its sharp increase in revenue helped soften what the report described as more tepid growth from the company’s core Search business and YouTube.
That contrast underscores the importance of Cloud to Alphabet’s broader performance. While the unit delivered substantial top-line growth, the gains were not enough to fully reassure investors about the company’s overall results.
Investor response remains cautious
Despite the strong Cloud revenue figure, investors were not satisfied with the quarter’s performance. The report also described Alphabet’s cash flow as remaining deeply negative, adding pressure to the otherwise positive Cloud result.
The figures show a mixed picture for Alphabet: Google Cloud is expanding rapidly, but that momentum is being weighed against slower growth elsewhere and ongoing concerns about cash flow. The company’s third-quarter results therefore offered support without resolving the concerns reflected in the investor response.
What the results show
Google Cloud’s more-than-doubling of revenue is the clearest growth point in the report. However, the wider results indicate that strong performance from one business was insufficient to overcome weaker momentum from Search and YouTube and deeply negative cash flow.
