Investor appetite for Indian stock exchange equities is surging, with unlisted regional players like the Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India (MSEI) and the Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) seeing their share values climb dramatically in 2024. This rally is largely fueled by anticipation for the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) blockbuster initial public offering, prompting a speculative revaluation of smaller exchanges.
Shares of MSEI have jumped 108% this year, rising from Rs 1.30 to Rs 2.70, while CSE shares are up 85%, moving from Rs 20 to Rs 37. This investor frenzy mirrors the performance of the BSE, India's only listed exchange, whose stock has rallied over 300% in the last year. Market participants are betting that the upcoming NSE IPO will trigger a significant repricing across the entire sector, creating value in these currently unlisted entities.
Beyond the IPO speculation, the exchanges are also benefiting from their own turnaround efforts. MSEI has entered a strategic partnership with Fex Global and received in-principle approval from SEBI to launch a commodity derivatives segment. The exchange is also showing financial improvement, narrowing its net loss to Rs 17.15 crore for the nine months ended December 2023 from Rs 20.84 crore a year prior, while its revenue from operations grew substantially.
Similarly, the Calcutta Stock Exchange is pursuing a revival plan under new leadership. It recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) aimed at encouraging small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to list on its platform. This initiative seeks to carve out a niche market and generate new revenue streams for the historic exchange.
While the combination of strategic initiatives and market speculation has created significant momentum, the rally carries inherent risks. The performance of these unlisted shares remains heavily tied to the successful execution of the NSE IPO. Any delays or a less-than-favorable valuation for NSE could temper enthusiasm. Furthermore, the success of MSEI and CSE ultimately depends on their ability to execute their revival plans and build sustainable business models in a competitive landscape.
