Automated traffic from bots and AI agents has officially surpassed human activity on the web, a tipping point reached far sooner than analysts predicted. According to network services company Cloudflare, nearly 60% of website requests in May came from non-human sources, prompting its CEO, Matthew Prince, to call for a fundamental change in how AI companies source their data.
The surge in automated traffic, largely driven by AI crawlers scraping content to train models, has dramatically outpaced expectations. Prince had previously forecast that bots would overtake human traffic by the end of 2025. The reality of it occurring in May of this year highlights the explosive growth of data consumption by AI systems. Projecting this trend forward, Prince anticipates that automated traffic could be 1,000 times greater than human traffic within five years.
This shift poses a significant economic challenge for content creators and website owners. Many of the AI crawlers ingest enormous quantities of information without providing reciprocal value. Unlike human visitors who generate advertising revenue or engage with content, these bots often fail to send any traffic or financial compensation back to the source sites. This one-way value extraction threatens the business models that have supported the open internet for decades.
In response to this growing imbalance, Prince is advocating for a new paradigm where AI developers are required to pay for the data they consume. “Companies need to get paid by the AI companies for what is the fuel that runs these AI systems,” Prince stated. This position frames website content not as a free resource to be scraped, but as a valuable commodity essential for the development of artificial intelligence. As a provider of services to a vast number of websites, Cloudflare is positioning itself as an advocate for its customers in this emerging conflict over data monetization.
