Long COVID's Neurological Toll: Brain Scans Reveal 'Rewiring' as Cause of Fatigue Researchers in Vienna have identified a potential neurological basis for the persistent...
Researchers in Vienna have identified a potential neurological basis for the persistent fatigue and cognitive difficulties, often called “brain fog,” experienced by individuals with long COVID. A new study indicates that the brains of these patients exhibit altered activity patterns, suggesting they must exert more effort to perform tasks compared to healthy individuals.
The investigation, conducted by MedUni Vienna and the University of Vienna, utilized high-resolution functional MRI (fMRI) at 7 Tesla to compare brain activity between 21 people with long COVID and a control group of 21 healthy participants. While both groups performed equally well on cognitive and motor tasks, the fMRI scans revealed significant differences in their underlying neural processes. The advanced imaging technology allowed for a detailed view of these functional shifts.
The study found distinct changes in the brain activity of the long COVID group, particularly in the motor cortex and frontal lobe. These regions are critical for planning movements and executing higher-level cognitive functions. The findings suggest the brain may be “rewiring” itself or compensating for neuronal damage. A key correlation emerged: the more severe a patient’s reported fatigue, the more pronounced the changes in their brain activity. This indicates their brains are working harder to achieve the same level of performance, which could directly explain the feeling of exhaustion.
These findings provide a biological explanation for symptoms that have been challenging to objectively measure and treat. By identifying specific patterns of brain activity associated with long COVID, this research opens a pathway for developing new diagnostic tools to validate patient experiences. Furthermore, understanding the neurological mechanisms at play could guide the creation of targeted therapeutic strategies aimed at addressing the root cause of the fatigue and cognitive impairment, rather than just managing symptoms.
The study marks a crucial step in moving the understanding of long COVID from a collection of subjective symptoms to a condition with identifiable physiological markers, potentially transforming its clinical management and perception within the healthcare industry.
