British Steel plan lacks credibility, MPs say

British Steel’s ambitious £1.25 billion decarbonisation plan has been met with sharp criticism from the UK Parliament’s Business and Trade Committee, which has labeled the proposal as lacking credibility and called for a pause on a proposed £300 million government support package.

The company, owned by China’s Jingye Group, intends to close the two blast furnaces at its main Scunthorpe site and replace them with less carbon-intensive electric arc furnaces (EAFs). While the move is aimed at modernizing operations and reducing emissions, lawmakers have raised serious alarms about its strategic and economic consequences.

Concerns Over Job Losses and National Capacity

The parliamentary committee’s primary concern is the potential loss of up to 2,000 jobs under the current proposal. Furthermore, the shift to EAFs, which typically recycle scrap steel, would end the UK’s capacity for primary, or virgin, steelmaking. This would leave the country entirely dependent on imports for a critical industrial material, a strategic vulnerability that the committee deemed unacceptable.

Call to Halt Government Funding

Citing a lack of detail and a convincing business case from Jingye, the committee has urged the government to withhold its financial support. The MPs argue that taxpayer money should not be committed until the company provides a comprehensive plan that justifies the investment and addresses the long-term impact on the workforce and national supply chain. The committee also noted similar concerns with a decarbonisation plan proposed by Tata Steel at its Port Talbot site.

Future Outlook

The report places significant pressure on both British Steel and the government. Jingye Group must now decide whether to furnish a more transparent and detailed strategy to secure the crucial funding. In its defense, British Steel maintains that its proposal is the only viable path to creating a sustainable, green business for the future.

The government is now faced with a difficult choice: either push forward with the subsidy to secure a greener, albeit smaller, steel industry or heed the committee's advice and demand a revised plan that better protects jobs and sovereign manufacturing capabilities.
