India's benchmark stock indices finished last week largely unchanged, signaling a period of consolidation after a recent rally. While the Nifty 50 slipped a marginal 0.15% to close at 23,465.60 and the BSE Sensex gained a slight 0.28%, the broader market demonstrated significant strength, hinting at robust investor appetite beyond the blue-chip names.
A clear divergence emerged between the headline indices and smaller companies. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices both climbed over 2% for the week, outperforming their large-cap counterparts. Sector-specific performance was also mixed. The Nifty Realty index was the top performer with a 3.4% gain, followed by Consumer Durables, which rose 2.4%. In contrast, the Nifty IT index was the primary laggard, shedding 1.4%.
The Nifty 50 is currently trading within a defined range. Technical analysts identify immediate support at the 23,200 mark, with the 23,000 level acting as a crucial floor. On the upside, the 23,500-23,600 zone presents a significant hurdle. A decisive breakout above this resistance could propel the index towards 23,800 and potentially 24,000. Options data reinforces this view, with significant call writing at the 23,500 and 23,600 strikes, suggesting traders anticipate the index remaining below these levels in the near term.
The dynamic between foreign and domestic institutional investors continues to influence market sentiment. Last week, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 9,252.09 crore. However, this selling pressure was more than absorbed by Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), who made net purchases of Rs 10,750.31 crore. Looking ahead, the market will take cues from US economic data, including PMI figures and housing sales, as well as commentary from Federal Reserve officials.
Domestically, the progress of the monsoon will be closely monitored. The primary market is also set to be active, with several initial public offerings (IPOs) and new listings scheduled, which could draw investor capital and attention. The interplay of these global and domestic factors will likely dictate market direction in the coming week.
