Disney’s first CTO led an AI startup it once accused of copying its characters

Character.AI, a prominent AI chatbot startup valued at $5 billion, has appointed a former top Walt Disney Co. legal executive to its board. Rita Tuzon, who served as Disney’s executive vice president and general counsel until her retirement in 2020, joins the company amidst an unresolved intellectual property dispute with her former employer.

The conflict stems from Character.AI’s platform, which allows users to create and interact with chatbots based on well-known fictional characters.
