Indian government bond yields climbed significantly as the market priced in the impact of domestic liquidity measures and global monetary policy cues. According to data from the Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL), the yield on the 10-year benchmark government bond increased by 7 basis points to 7.07%. The five-year bond experienced an even sharper rise, with its yield jumping 17 basis points to 6.79%.
A primary driver for the upward pressure on yields is the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) decision to conduct Open Market Operations (OMO) through the sale of government securities. By selling bonds, the central bank effectively withdraws liquidity from the banking system. This increase in the supply of bonds available on the open market leads to lower bond prices and, consequently, higher yields, as price and yield move in opposite directions.
Compounding the domestic factors is growing uncertainty surrounding the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory. Market participants are recalibrating expectations, with many now betting that the Fed may keep its policy rates higher for an extended period to combat inflation. This outlook on U.S. rates typically influences global capital flows and risk sentiment, putting upward pressure on yields in emerging markets like India as they compete for international investment.
The rise in government bond yields has direct consequences for the broader economy. Higher sovereign yields serve as a benchmark for corporate borrowing, meaning businesses may face increased costs when raising capital through debt. For the government, it elevates the cost of borrowing to finance its fiscal deficit. For existing bond investors, the rising yields translate into a mark-to-market loss on their fixed-income portfolios. The steeper increase in the five-year bond yield compared to the 10-year benchmark suggests pronounced concern over near-to-medium term liquidity and rate conditions.
