UK Banks Escalate Customer Acquisition War with £200 Cash Incentives Competition among Britain's high street banks for new retail customers has intensified, with severa...

Competition among Britain's high street banks for new retail customers has intensified, with several major institutions deploying cash incentives of up to £200 to persuade individuals to switch their primary current account. The strategy highlights a continuing battle for market share in a competitive consumer finance landscape.
NatWest and its Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) subsidiary are at the forefront of this push, offering a £200 bonus to new and some existing customers. This is complemented by a linked savings account boasting a 6.17% interest rate on balances up to £5,000. Not far behind, Lloyds Bank has tabled a £175 incentive for those moving to its Club Lloyds account, while First Direct is also offering £175, alongside other perks like a 7% regular saver account.
These offers are not unconditional. To secure the NatWest bonus, for example, customers must deposit £1,250 and log into the mobile banking app within 60 days of opening the account. The Lloyds offer is tied to its Club Lloyds account, which carries a £3 monthly fee, although this is waived if a minimum of £2,000 is deposited each month. Such stipulations are designed to ensure the banks attract active and engaged customers rather than just bonus hunters.
The use of these significant cash incentives, often termed "golden hellos," underscores a key customer acquisition strategy in UK retail banking. In a mature market, attracting new account holders is a primary avenue for growth, creating opportunities to cross-sell more profitable products like mortgages, loans, and investments. The streamlined seven-day Current Account Switch Service (CASS) facilitates this customer movement, ensuring all direct debits and standing orders are transferred automatically, which lowers the barrier for consumers to change providers and capitalize on these financial rewards.
