Artificial intelligence is advancing alongside a growing debate about the risks it may create. The concerns extend beyond technical errors, touching privacy, geopolitics, warfare and democracy.
Bias and unreliable answers
AI systems can reinforce existing bias, meaning their outputs may reflect or deepen unfair patterns. They can also hallucinate, producing information that is not reliable. These weaknesses make accuracy and accountability central concerns in the use of AI.
Privacy and geopolitical risks
The technology can expose sensitive information, creating potential harm when confidential data is not adequately protected. Its geopolitical use adds another layer of concern, particularly where AI applications can make war easier.
Democracy and existential questions
The discussion also links AI to the health of democratic systems. If the technology contributes to the spread of unreliable information or is used in ways that weaken public institutions, democracy becomes harder to protect. At the same time, the conversation has expanded to include AI’s existential risks.
The central issue is not simply whether AI is powerful, but how its power is used. Bias, hallucinations, data exposure, military applications and broader threats all point to the need for a serious public conversation about the technology’s consequences.
