Sagarmala Finance Corporation (SFC) is poised to make its debut in the sustainable debt market with a planned issuance of its first-ever blue bond on September 28. The company is targeting a fundraise of six billion rupees (₹6 billion) to channel capital into India's growing maritime sector.
The bond issuance is being managed by SBI Capital Markets. According to the offering's structure, prospective investors are scheduled to submit their coupon and commitment bids on the preceding Monday. This process will determine the final pricing and allocation for the debt instrument.
Signaling strong creditworthiness, the maiden blue bond has secured a high-grade AA+ rating from two major credit rating agencies, Icra and Care. This rating is expected to attract significant interest from institutional investors, pension funds, and asset managers looking for stable, long-term investments with a focus on sustainability.
The proceeds from the bond sale are specifically earmarked for projects crucial to the nation's maritime capabilities. The capital will be deployed to support the development of modern ports and to enhance coastal road networks, which are vital for improving logistics and trade efficiency. This aligns with the broader national strategy to bolster coastal infrastructure.
SFC's blue bond represents a significant milestone for sustainable financing in India. As a financial instrument dedicated to ocean-related projects, its successful launch could create a template for other public and private sector entities to fund maritime and water-based initiatives. For investors, it introduces a new asset class within the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) landscape, diversifying portfolios beyond traditional green bonds. The high credit rating provides a degree of security that could help deepen the market for such specialized thematic bonds, potentially unlocking further investment into the country's blue economy.
