Confidence among individual investors has deteriorated significantly, with bullish sentiment regarding the stock market's six-month outlook plummeting to its lowest level in 16 months. The latest American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) Sentiment Survey highlights a growing sense of caution that has overtaken market optimism.
The survey, conducted between November 30 and December 6, showed that expectations for stock price increases fell by a substantial 8.8 percentage points to just 22.5%. This marks the lowest level of bullish sentiment recorded since early August 2022. The reading has now remained below its historical average of 37.5% for 66 consecutive weeks, underscoring a prolonged period of investor apprehension.
In contrast, bearish sentiment—the expectation that stock prices will fall over the next six months—climbed 4.3 percentage points to 43.1%. This figure is notably above the historical average of 31.0% and marks the tenth time in the last twelve weeks that pessimism has exceeded its long-term trend. Neutral sentiment, which reflects an expectation of sideways market movement, also rose by 4.5 percentage points to 34.4%, surpassing its historical average of 31.5% for the fourth straight week.
The divergence between optimism and pessimism is further illustrated by the bull-bear spread, which is calculated by subtracting the bearish percentage from the bullish percentage. The spread now stands at a deeply negative -20.6 percentage points. This is the sixth time in the past seven weeks that the measure has been in negative territory, signaling that bearish outlooks substantially outnumber bullish ones among survey participants.
This sustained period of below-average optimism and elevated pessimism indicates that individual investors harbor significant concerns about the near-term trajectory of the equity markets. Such widespread negative sentiment can contribute to increased market volatility as investors may be quicker to sell on negative news or less inclined to buy into market dips. The data points to a cautious investor base heading into the new year, which could act as a headwind for market performance if the sentiment translates into reduced equity allocations.
