Jefferies' global head of equity strategy, Chris Wood, has identified India's energy sector as the nation's most significant long-term structural growth narrative, prompting a key addition to his India-focused portfolio. Hitachi Energy India has been added to the GREED & fear long-only portfolio with a 4% weighting, a move financed by trimming stakes in ICICI Lombard, HDFC Life, and Godrej Properties.
The strategic bet is anchored in India's vast and unmet demand for electricity. The country's per capita consumption stands at just 1,300 kWh, a fraction of China's 6,000 kWh and the OECD average of 8,000 kWh. Closing this gap to support economic development will require a massive expansion of power generation capacity, which currently has a base-load of only 240 GW.
Wood describes the investment in Hitachi Energy as a classic “picks-and-shovels” play on the energy transition. Rather than focusing solely on power producers, this strategy targets the critical enabling infrastructure. Hitachi Energy specializes in power transmission and grid systems, which are essential for connecting new energy sources to consumers and ensuring grid stability.
This infrastructure build-out is directly supported by government objectives. India has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Integrating this new capacity, much of which is located in remote areas, into the national grid necessitates substantial investment in transmission infrastructure. This creates a clear demand pipeline for companies like Hitachi Energy.
This portfolio adjustment underscores a growing investor focus on the entire energy value chain in India, extending beyond generation to transmission and distribution. It highlights the significant market potential for companies that provide the essential technology and equipment for grid modernization and expansion. As India pursues its renewable energy goals, the transmission segment is poised for sustained investment and growth, representing a critical bottleneck and opportunity in the country's energy story.
