Shares of omnichannel eyewear retailer Lenskart experienced a 3% downturn in the unlisted market following a substantial block deal valued at approximately Rs 2,560 crore. The transaction involved the sale of 3 crore shares, signaling significant investor activity in the profitable unicorn ahead of its anticipated public offering.
The large-scale trade was executed at a floor price of Rs 853.50 per share. The seller is believed to be Platinum Jasmine A 2018 Trust, an entity associated with a private equity fund. This move represents a partial monetization of its investment in the rapidly growing eyewear company. The identity of the buyer or buyers in the deal was not immediately disclosed.
Prior to this transaction, Platinum Jasmine held a 5.76% stake in Lenskart, which amounted to 4.79 crore shares. The sale of 3 crore shares constitutes a significant reduction in its holding. Such stake sales by early-stage private equity investors are common as they seek to realize returns on their investments, particularly as a portfolio company matures and moves closer to an Initial Public Offering (IPO).
Lenskart, last valued at $4.5 billion, remains a closely watched entity in the private markets. This block deal underscores the active trading and liquidity available for shares of high-profile, unlisted companies. The event comes as the company is reportedly preparing for a public market debut within the next two to three years. In a separate transaction last year, private equity firm ChrysCapital also acquired a significant stake in the company for $100 million, highlighting continued institutional interest.
The immediate 3% price drop reflects the market's absorption of a large supply of shares. While a large sale can sometimes pressure prices downward, it also provides an entry point for new long-term investors to acquire a substantial position in the company. For Lenskart, this reshuffling of its shareholder base is a natural part of its journey towards a potential IPO. The company's profitable status and strong market position continue to make it an attractive asset for investors focused on the consumer retail sector.
