Indian benchmark indices extended their record-setting run for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, with robust performance in financial services stocks pushing the market to new heights. The BSE Sensex gained 620.73 points, or 0.80%, to close at 78,053.52, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 147.50 points, or 0.63%, to settle at 23,721.30.
The day's gains were heavily concentrated in the financial sector. The Nifty Financial Services 25/50 index emerged as a top performer, supported by strong buying interest in banking and non-banking financial companies. Key contributors to the rally included UltraTech Cement, Bajaj Finance, and Bajaj Finserv, which featured prominently among the top gainers on both the Sensex and Nifty. HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries also provided significant support to the Sensex's upward movement.
In a clear display of sectoral divergence, metal stocks faced a broad-based sell-off. The Nifty Metal index was the session's biggest loser, weighing down the overall market sentiment. Major steel and metals producers, including Hindalco Industries, Tata Steel, and JSW Steel, were among the top decliners, signaling investor caution in the commodities space.
While the headline indices posted strong gains, the broader market painted a more mixed picture. The BSE MidCap index edged up by a modest 0.17%, but the BSE SmallCap index registered a slight decline of 0.08%. This divergence suggests that the current rally is selective and not yet broad-based across all market segments.
The sustained rally in blue-chip stocks pushed the total market capitalization of firms listed on the BSE to a new all-time high of ₹437.24 lakh crore. This milestone reflects the increasing investor wealth and confidence in the Indian equity market, particularly in its large-cap constituents.
