Mauritius-based investment fund Soach Global is capitalizing on its long-term bet on India's National Stock Exchange (NSE), initiating a partial exit that is poised to yield a 25-fold return. The move to sell a significant portion of its holdings comes as the country's largest stock exchange prepares for its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO).
Soach Global, an investor in the exchange for the past decade, is selling 1.65 million shares. The fund acquired its initial stake at an average cost of approximately ₹128 per share. With current valuations in the unlisted market pricing NSE's shares around ₹3,200 each, the transaction underscores the substantial gains reaped by the early backer.
This sale represents a strategic move by Soach Global to de-risk its position and lock in significant profits ahead of the public listing. However, the exit is not a complete one. The fund will retain a stake of 350,000 shares, down from its original holding of 2 million shares, signaling continued confidence in the exchange’s long-term growth trajectory. This balanced approach allows the firm to secure its windfall while maintaining exposure to potential post-IPO upside.
The transaction sends a strong signal about the robust valuations being commanded by the NSE in private markets. It highlights the immense value created by the exchange over the last ten years, attracting attention from a roster of pre-IPO investors that includes New York-based Tiger Global. This successful, high-multiple exit serves as a powerful benchmark for potential returns and could heighten market anticipation for the upcoming public offering. The key test will be whether public market investors share the same enthusiasm for this valuation when the IPO eventually launches.
