Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd. (MOFSL) has received a license from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to establish a securities custody business, marking a significant expansion of its capital market services. The company plans to launch operations through a new, wholly-owned subsidiary in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year.
This move is a core part of MOFSL's strategy to become a comprehensive financial services provider for institutional clients. The addition of custodian services complements the group's established presence in institutional broking, asset management, and investment banking. By entering this segment, the company aims to create a stable, annuity-based revenue stream, which can balance the more cyclical nature of its other market-linked businesses.
The new custodian arm will cater to a broad range of institutional clients. Its primary targets include Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), and prominent domestic institutional investors (DIIs). The client base is expected to encompass mutual funds, insurance companies, and Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), leveraging the company's existing relationships within the institutional segment.
The custodian services sector is traditionally characterized by high transaction volumes and thin margins, a space largely dominated by major foreign banks and a select few domestic players. MOFSL's entry introduces a new, well-capitalized domestic competitor. Success in this area will depend on achieving scale and operational efficiency to compete effectively. This initiative is expected to deepen the company’s institutional relationships and provide significant cross-selling opportunities across its various business verticals, reinforcing its long-term growth and market position.
