The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) is set to enter the public markets with a ₹10,000 crore initial public offering, marking the second-largest issue in the country's financial history. The exchange has already garnered significant institutional backing, securing ₹4,500 crore from a diverse group of 189 anchor investors before the public offer opens.
This landmark transaction places the NSE's offering behind only the Life Insurance Corporation of India's (LIC) ₹21,008 crore IPO. The strong institutional interest underscores investor confidence in the exchange's market position and growth prospects.
The public issue is scheduled to run from December 9 to December 11, with a price band fixed at ₹2,485 to ₹2,600 per share. The offering is structured entirely as an Offer for Sale (OFS), meaning the exchange itself is not raising new capital. Instead, the IPO will provide an exit route for some of its existing shareholders to monetize their investments.
The anchor investor book saw participation from prominent global and domestic institutions. Key investors include the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. A significant number of domestic mutual funds and insurance companies also participated. The total of 189 anchor investors is the second-highest recorded for an Indian IPO, surpassed only by LIC, which attracted 326.
Major institutional shareholders participating in the OFS include the State Bank of India (SBI), Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), IFCI, IDBI Bank, and the Stock Holding Corporation of India. Following the IPO, the National Stock Exchange's shares will be listed on the competing BSE platform, as regulatory frameworks prevent a company from self-listing on its own exchange.
The successful launch of the NSE's IPO is a significant event for India's capital markets. It not only provides investors with an opportunity to own a stake in the country's primary market infrastructure but also serves as a key barometer of investor sentiment. The performance of the stock post-listing will be closely watched as an indicator of the health and depth of the Indian financial ecosystem.
