U.S. Crude Stockpile Surge Pressures Oil Prices Despite OPEC+ Production Warnings Oil prices retreated as government data revealed an unexpected build in U.S. crude and ...

Oil prices retreated as government data revealed an unexpected build in U.S. crude and gasoline inventories, stoking fears of weakening fuel demand. The slide occurred despite persistent global supply risks, including potential OPEC+ production cuts and looming sanctions on Russian energy exports.
Brent crude futures fell 0.4%, or 30 cents, to settle at $84.71 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined by 0.3%, or 27 cents, to $80.45. The market's focus shifted squarely to demand-side indicators following the latest U.S. government report.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that domestic crude inventories rose by 1.8 million barrels last week. This figure starkly contrasted with analyst expectations for a 2.6 million barrel draw, indicating that consumption is not as robust as previously forecast. Similarly, U.S. gasoline stocks increased by 900,000 barrels, confounding predictions of a 700,000 barrel decline and further pressuring the market.
Counterbalancing the bearish inventory data are significant geopolitical and policy-related supply threats. Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, forcefully dismissed reports that OPEC+ was considering an output increase as “laughable.” He reiterated that the producer group remains ready to cut production if market conditions warrant, signaling a firm floor for prices.
The market also continues to watch developments related to Russian oil. The European Union is preparing to tighten sanctions on Russian crude, while the G7 nations are finalizing a plan to impose a price cap on the country's oil exports. These measures are designed to disrupt supply flows and add a layer of uncertainty that could support higher prices in the coming months.
The oil market is currently caught in a tug-of-war between fears of a global economic slowdown curbing demand and the reality of a tight supply landscape. The recent EIA report has given bears the upper hand, but the willingness of OPEC+ to intervene and the uncertain impact of Russian sanctions mean that volatility is likely to remain a dominant feature of the market.
