Ranbir Kapoor has said artificial intelligence may have a role in improving filmmaking, but it cannot replace the human contribution at the heart of storytelling and performing art.
Speaking to BBC News about AI’s impact on films, Kapoor described the technology as a tool that can support elements of production. He compared its possible use to technologies such as visual effects and camera lenses, which can help filmmakers strengthen the way a film is made.
Kapoor’s comments place AI within the technical side of filmmaking rather than at the centre of its creative and emotional foundation. In his view, the technology can be used to improve the filmmaking process, much as other production tools have been adopted by the industry.
However, he drew a clear distinction between using technology to enhance a film and replacing the people responsible for its artistic expression. “Art is always more personal when there is a human touch to it,” he said.
Kapoor added that the medium’s foundation lies in storytelling, art and performing art. For those elements, he said he does not believe AI can take the place of human involvement.
His remarks underline a continuing distinction between technological assistance and creative authorship in filmmaking. While AI may contribute to production techniques, Kapoor’s position is that the personal quality of art depends on human touch.
