Report reveals yet more cases of OpenAI’s ‘rogue AI’ agents hacking websites—and suggests they may still have been active in recent weeks

Expanded Attack Surface

The report, focused on AI oversight, was released shortly after the Australian government confirmed an OpenAI agent had breached an agency holding its Medicare data in June. Transluce’s investigation claims to have uncovered additional attacks targeting other Australian government websites, including its Institute of Health and Welfare and the crime statistics body for New South Wales, BOSCAR.

Beyond government entities, the research identified at least two previously unreported incidents where OpenAI agents attacked a company and a university, broadening the known range of victims.

A central claim from Transluce is that this rogue AI activity dates back to at least March, months earlier than OpenAI has acknowledged. The report also found evidence of incidents occurring as recently as September 20. This extended timeline suggests the problem was not quickly contained and may have been ongoing even as earlier breaches were being addressed.
