The Indian rupee advanced against the US dollar in early trade, climbing 13 paise to 83.42 from its previous close of 83.55. The currency's strength was primarily driven by positive sentiment in the domestic equity markets, though gains were tempered by a resilient US dollar on the global stage.
India's benchmark stock indices provided a significant tailwind for the rupee. The BSE Sensex rose by 151.72 points to trade at 73,995.33, while the broader NSE Nifty advanced 53.60 points to 22,455.65. This risk-on sentiment in the local market typically attracts capital and bolsters the domestic currency. However, data showed that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers on Wednesday, offloading shares worth Rs 2,511.74 crore, indicating some caution among international investors.
The rupee's appreciation was held in check by the strength of the US dollar. The Dollar Index, which measures the greenback's performance against a basket of six major currencies, edged higher to 105.69. A stronger dollar makes dollar-denominated assets more attractive and can weigh on emerging market currencies like the rupee. Forex traders are now closely watching for the release of key US economic data, including first-quarter GDP figures and the PCE inflation report, which will be critical in shaping the Federal Reserve's future monetary policy decisions.
Providing some support for the rupee was a decline in global oil prices. Brent crude futures, a key benchmark, fell 0.38% to USD 85.04 per barrel. As a major importer of crude oil, lower prices help reduce India's import bill and ease pressure on the currency. The near-term direction for the rupee will likely be dictated by the forthcoming US economic indicators. A higher-than-expected inflation reading could further strengthen the dollar and erase the rupee's recent gains, while weaker data might provide room for further appreciation.
