The Indian rupee weakened on Monday, closing at 83.15 against the U.S. dollar, as expectations of a prolonged period of high U.S. interest rates bolstered the American currency across global markets. The rupee's previous close was 83.09.
The dollar's broad-based rally, which saw the dollar index approach a 6.5-month high, served as the primary driver for the rupee's depreciation. The sentiment reflects the U.S. Federal Reserve's recent signals that it intends to keep monetary policy tight to manage inflation, a stance that has increased the appeal of dollar-denominated assets.
Market participants noted that India's central bank stepped in to manage the currency's slide. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is believed to have sold dollars through state-run banks, a common strategy to prevent excessive volatility and support the local currency. According to an FX trader at a private bank, this intervention likely prevented the rupee from breaching the 83.15-83.20 range.
The pressure was not isolated to the rupee. Other Asian currencies also retreated against the strong dollar, highlighting the regional impact of U.S. monetary policy expectations. The offshore Chinese yuan, for instance, fell to its weakest point in over a week, underscoring the widespread effect of the dollar's ascent.
The market dynamics also affected forward premiums, which declined. The 1-year implied yield on the dollar-rupee pair dropped to 1.63%, a move indicating tighter cash dollar supply in the system. This tightness is partly attributed to the RBI's dollar-selling intervention, which removes dollars from the local market.
Traders are now looking ahead to key U.S. economic data, including reports on consumer confidence and new home sales. These releases will be closely watched for fresh insights into the health of the U.S. economy and potential future moves by the Federal Reserve. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices remained stable near $93.3 per barrel, a factor that can also influence the rupee's performance due to India's status as a major oil importer.
