RBI Intervenes to Halt Rupee's Slide as Forward Premiums Spike The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stepped into the foreign exchange market on Tuesday, selling U.S. dollars ...
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stepped into the foreign exchange market on Tuesday, selling U.S. dollars to support the rupee after it opened weaker and neared its all-time low. The central bank's action stabilized the currency, which had weakened to 83.5650 against the dollar, just shy of its record low of 83.5750.
Following the intervention through state-run banks, the rupee recovered to trade around 83.53. The move signals the RBI’s strong intent to defend the current record-low level, providing a psychological floor for the currency amid broad strength in the U.S. dollar and weakness across most Asian currencies.
In a parallel development, dollar-rupee forward premiums surged, with the one-year implied yield climbing to 1.74%, its highest point in over a month. This sharp increase is reportedly driven by a combination of paying activity from importers and buy/sell swaps executed by foreign banks.
The spike in forward premiums has created what traders describe as a lucrative opportunity for exporters. The elevated rates make it financially attractive for companies to hedge their future dollar receivables by selling them in the forward market. This activity is widely expected to increase the supply of forward dollars, which should, in turn, help cool down the recently inflated premiums.
While the RBI's intervention provides immediate support, the rupee remains exposed to external pressures. The central bank's consistent defense of the 83.5750 level has established a clear line for market participants. The near-term direction of forward premiums will likely be dictated by how quickly exporters move to capitalize on the current favorable hedging conditions. This market-driven correction could restore balance to the forward market without direct central bank action in that segment.
