Trading on India’s leading stock exchanges, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE, is suspended today, September 19, for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. This scheduled holiday brings a halt to all transactions in the equity, equity derivative, and Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) segments. Normal trading operations are set to resume on Wednesday, September 20.

Commodity Markets Observe Partial Holiday

While equity markets are fully closed, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will operate on a partial schedule. The exchange will remain shut for its morning session, which runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. However, trading in commodities will be available during the evening session, which commences at 5:00 pm and concludes between 11:30 pm and 11:55 pm.

Market Performance Preceding the Holiday

The closure follows a session of minor declines for Indian benchmarks. On Monday, the BSE Sensex finished the day down 241.79 points, or 0.36%, at 67,596.84. Similarly, the Nifty50 index edged lower by 59.05 points, or 0.29%, to close at 20,133.30. The one-day trading pause allows market participants to recalibrate ahead of Wednesday’s opening bell.

Upcoming 2023 Trading Holidays

This is the first of two trading holidays in September, with the next scheduled for September 28 to mark Eid-e-Milad. In total, the 2023 calendar contains 15 stock market holidays. Investors should also note upcoming closures for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 24, Diwali Balipratipada on November 14, Gurunanak Jayanti on November 27, and Christmas on December 25.
