E-commerce platform Temu has apparently dismantled a vast and costly advertising operation on Meta's Facebook and Instagram that relied heavily on what a research group identified as inauthentic influencer accounts. The move follows the public exposure of a strategy that saw nearly $1 billion channeled into partnership ads targeting European consumers.
The campaign, which ran for 16 months ending in April 2026, involved a total spend approaching $1 billion on Meta's platforms. According to Czech research firm Online Risk Labs, these ads specifically targeted users across the United Kingdom and 27 European Union countries, representing a significant investment in influencer-led marketing for the region.
The investigation by Online Risk Labs raised serious questions about the legitimacy of the influencers involved. The firm analyzed the 100 creator accounts featuring the most Temu ads and concluded that approximately 73 of them were likely fake. Telltale signs included nonsensical account names, frequent name changes, and profiles being based in countries like China, Russia, Bangladesh, and Iran—all indicators of inauthentic social media activity.
The apparent cessation of funding for this network occurred in the days following the publication of the research findings. This rapid reversal suggests a direct response to the public exposure of its reliance on a questionable marketing strategy, highlighting the reputational risks associated with such practices.
This incident casts a spotlight on the vulnerabilities within the influencer marketing ecosystem and the partnership advertising models on major social media platforms. It raises critical questions about the due diligence performed by both advertisers and the platforms themselves in vetting creators. For Meta, it underscores the persistent challenge of policing inauthentic activity, while for the broader digital advertising market, it serves as a cautionary tale about the potential for large-scale ad spend to be funneled through fraudulent networks, potentially eroding advertiser and consumer trust. Temu's apparent pivot away from this massive spend marks a significant moment for the digital marketing industry, forcing a re-evaluation of platform oversight and advertiser responsibility.
