UN turns to Google to make its global data ready for AI agents

The United Nations has launched a major initiative with Google Cloud to consolidate its extensive public data, aiming to accelerate lagging progress on its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The partnership seeks to transform how the organization’s information is accessed and utilized by policymakers, researchers, and the public.

Currently, crucial UN data is fragmented across numerous websites and databases, often presented in static reports or cumbersome formats that hinder effective analysis. This collaboration aims to dismantle these information silos and create a dynamic, centralized resource.

A Strategic Partnership to Unlock Data

Under the agreement, Google will provide its advanced cloud infrastructure, data analytics, and artificial intelligence technologies to power a new platform known as the UN Data Commons. Managed by the UN’s Office of Information and Communications Technology, the project will leverage tools such as Google's Vertex AI platform and Gemini models to organize and synthesize information from across the UN system.

The goal is to create an accessible ecosystem that moves beyond outdated data-sharing methods. By unifying disparate datasets, the UN intends to provide a clearer, more comprehensive picture of global progress and challenges, enabling more informed decision-making.

Initial Focus on Critical Global Goals

The UN Data Commons will initially focus on three critical areas aligned with the SDGs: climate action, global food security, and access to finance. Success in these pilot areas is expected to pave the way for expanding the platform to encompass data related to all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which target a 2030 deadline.

In addition to providing its technology, Google will offer technical support and training for UN staff, fostering the skills necessary to manage and leverage the new data platform effectively. This initiative represents a significant step in the UN's efforts to modernize its data infrastructure for a greater global impact.
