The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) is poised to move forward with its highly anticipated initial public offering, according to its chief executive, Ashish Chauhan. Speaking at an event in Mumbai, Chauhan stated it is “very likely” the exchange will list on its own platform once it secures all necessary regulatory clearances.
This marks one of the strongest indications that the bourse's protracted journey toward a public listing may be nearing its conclusion. The final step remains a formal approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the country's capital markets regulator.
The NSE's listing plans have been stalled for several years, creating significant anticipation in the market. The exchange first filed draft IPO papers in 2016, but the process was derailed by regulatory probes into governance lapses, including the co-location controversy. These investigations placed the offering in an indefinite holding pattern, awaiting resolution and a clean bill of health from SEBI.
The appointment of Ashish Chauhan as MD & CEO in July 2022 was seen by many as a positive step toward resolving the impasse. Chauhan brings direct experience in this area, having successfully managed the listing of rival Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) during his tenure as its chief. His confident remarks suggest that dialogue with the regulator is progressing.
The potential IPO of India’s largest equity bourse is a landmark event for the nation's financial sector. A successful listing would enhance corporate governance and transparency at the exchange, while providing a direct investment opportunity into the country's core market infrastructure. It would also bring the NSE in line with global peers and its domestic competitor, the BSE, which has been a publicly traded company for several years.
While investor appetite is expected to be strong, the timeline hinges entirely on SEBI's final decision. The regulator's approval will be the definitive trigger for the exchange to finally launch one of India's most awaited public offerings.
