Messi match row: Kerala police raid TV channel office

Police in the southern Indian state of Kerala have raided the Kozhikode office of Malayalam-language news channel MediaOne, seizing equipment after a complaint was filed by a local legislator regarding the outlet's reporting on a proposed football match.

Allegations of Reputational Damage

The raid was initiated based on a complaint by P.V. Anvar, an independent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) supported by the ruling Left Democratic Front. Anvar alleged that MediaOne broadcast a “fake story” claiming a planned exhibition match featuring Argentinian star Lionel Messi was canceled. He contended the report caused financial losses for the organizers and tarnished the state's reputation. Following the complaint, police registered a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code for forgery to harm reputation and the Kerala Police Act for causing a public nuisance. A team led by an Assistant Commissioner seized a computer hard disk, a laptop, and a reporter's mobile phone.

Channel Defends Reporting Accuracy

MediaOne has refuted the core of the complaint. The channel maintains that its report did not state the match was canceled. Instead, it claims its story accurately reflected that the organizers were facing significant challenges and that the event's future was uncertain, basing this on information received directly from those involved in its planning.

Raid Sparks Political Condemnation

The police action has ignited a political firestorm, with opposition leaders accusing the state government of suppressing journalistic independence. V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition from the Congress party, condemned the raid as a blatant “infringement on media freedom.” He accused the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government of intolerance toward criticism, drawing parallels between its actions and the “Sangh Parivar agenda,” a term often associated with right-wing nationalist groups. This incident adds to a contentious history for MediaOne, which previously fought and won a legal battle in the Supreme Court to overturn a broadcast ban imposed by the central government.
