A student-run movement is making significant strides in diversifying the population of India’s premier National Law Universities (NLUs), institutions historically dominated by students from affluent, urban backgrounds. This year, the initiative, known as Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education (IDIA), successfully guided 24 students from the government-run Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) into these top-tier law colleges.
The legal profession in India has long faced criticism for its lack of socio-economic diversity. High costs associated with entrance exam coaching and university fees create significant barriers for students from marginalized and rural communities. This imbalance results in a legal fraternity that does not fully represent the country's diverse population. IDIA, founded by the late Professor Shamnad Basheer, was created specifically to dismantle these barriers and foster a more inclusive environment in legal education.
IDIA operates on a unique, pan-India model where students from leading law schools volunteer to mentor and train aspiring lawyers from underprivileged backgrounds. The organization identifies promising students, often through partnerships with schools like the JNVs, and provides them with comprehensive, free coaching for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Beyond test preparation, IDIA offers mentorship throughout the students' law school journey and provides financial assistance to ensure they can complete their education.
The program's success is well-documented. To date, IDIA has trained over 100,000 students and helped 885 gain admission to leading law universities. Currently, the initiative is actively training around 600 students across 24 states. By creating a pipeline of talent from previously untapped communities, IDIA is not just launching individual careers but is also gradually reshaping the composition of India’s future legal leadership. The continued success of its partnership with JNVs indicates a sustainable pathway for increasing diversity within the bar and bench.
