India's Ministry of External Affairs has taken formal diplomatic action against Pakistan following a serious maritime incident where a Pakistani naval vessel collided with an Indian Coast Guard ship. The confrontation, which India has described as deliberate and unprofessional, occurred on Friday morning as the Indian vessel was intervening to protect an Indian fishing boat.
The incident involved the Pakistani Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) ship PMSC Barkat and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship Rajratan. According to Indian officials, the PMSC Barkat was illegally towing the Indian fishing boat Pavitra, with six crew members aboard, from Indian waters. When the ICG Rajratan responded to a distress call from the fishing boat and attempted to intervene, the Pakistani vessel deliberately rammed it at high speed.
In response, India's Ministry of External Affairs summoned a senior official from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. A strong protest was lodged, conveying India's grave concerns over the “deplorable and unprofessional” conduct. New Delhi has demanded that Islamabad conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure its forces refrain from such actions in the future.
The core of the dispute highlights the recurring issue of fishermen's safety in the region. The MEA reminded Pakistan of its bilateral obligations to not harass Indian fishermen. The six crew members of the Pavitra were successfully brought back to Okha, ensuring their safety after the tense encounter. This event underscores the persistent friction over maritime boundaries and the treatment of fishing communities.
