From Convent to Commerce: Ousted Kerala Nuns Launch E-Commerce Venture for Self-Reliance Three former Catholic nuns in Kerala have embarked on an entrepreneurial journe...
Three former Catholic nuns in Kerala have embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, launching an online apparel brand after being expelled from their congregation. The venture, named “La Sorella” (Italian for The Sister), represents a significant shift from a life dedicated to religious service to one focused on building financial self-sufficiency.
Operating from a rented house in Veliyathunadu, near Aluva, Sisters Anupama Kelamangalathuveli, Alphy Franco, and Ancitta Urumbil are leveraging tailoring skills acquired during their time in the convent. Their business model is built on a direct-to-consumer approach, selling products such as face masks, children's clothing, and nightgowns primarily through online channels and WhatsApp. The enterprise began modestly with a single borrowed sewing machine and has since expanded its capacity with the acquisition of a second machine.
The decision to enter the business world was born out of necessity. The three were expelled from the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) after participating in public protests demanding action against a bishop accused of rape. Having previously lived a communal life without personal assets, their expulsion forced them to find a new means of support. Their business is a direct response to their changed circumstances, providing a pathway to rebuild their lives independently.
La Sorella enters a competitive digital marketplace, but its founders' unique backstory provides a compelling narrative. The business taps into the growing trend of small-scale e-commerce operations in India that utilize social media for marketing and sales. For the founders, the primary objective is not large-scale market disruption but achieving a sustainable livelihood. The venture underscores a broader theme of resilience and empowerment, as the former nuns apply their existing skills to a new economic reality.
Their journey highlights the challenges of transitioning from a structured, non-commercial environment to the demands of running a business, from sourcing materials to managing sales and finances. The success of La Sorella will depend on their ability to scale operations, build a customer base, and navigate the complexities of the online retail landscape.
